Sony Alpha A100 wide-angle geometry test   To measure and compare the Sony DSLR-A100’s geometric distortion we photographed a test chart consisting of a grid pattern, using it and a number of rival models.

Here are the results for each camera with their bundled lenses at their widest focal length and an aperture of f8 set in Aperture Priority mode.

The images were analysed with Imatest using 5th Order line calculation and the full areas presented here at a reduced resolution.

The image above was taken with the Sony Alpha DSLR-A100 using the DT 18-70mm lens at 18mm f8. Barrel distortion was measured at 3.6% which is comparable to rival digital SLR kit lenses at wide angle.

Sony Alpha DSLR-A100 telephoto geometry comparison, using DT 18-70mm

Sony Alpha A100 telephoto geometry test   To measure and compare the Sony DSLR-A100’s geometric distortion we photographed a test chart consisting of a grid pattern, using it and a number of rival models.

Here are the results for each camera with their bundled lenses at their longest focal length and an aperture of f8 set in Aperture Priority mode.

The images were analysed with Imatest using 5th Order line calculation and the full areas presented here at a reduced resolution.

The image above was taken with the Sony Alpha DSLR-A100 using the DT 18-70mm lens at 70mm f8. Pincushion distortion was measured at 0.27%, which again is comparable to most rival digital SLR kit lenses. These results are however beaten by the almost perfect telephoto geometry of the Sony R1.
