To measure and compare the Sony Cyber-shot DSC W200’s corner sharpness we photographed the Enhanced Digital Camera Resolution Chart with it and a number of rival models, each using their best quality JPEG and default image tone and sharpening settings.

We used the built-in lenses at their widest and longest focal lengths and with various apertures starting from fully open. Note the Panasonic FX30 only offers two aperture settings at each focal length, so both are shown in this test.

The crops are taken from the extreme lower left corner of the chart and presented here at 100%.

Zoomed-out to wide angle, the Sony W200 delivers fairly sharp corner results which are comparable to most 3x / 4x compacts. There’s no coloured fringing here to worry about, although some geometric distortion is apparent, especially compared to the other cameras on test here.

Zoomed-into telephoto, the geometric distortion problem’s gone away, but in its place is noticeable coloured fringing, and a reduction in sharpness as the aperture is closed. If you don’t need a large depth of field with the W300, it would be better to manually set the aperture wide open when zoomed-into telephoto. Now let’s have a look at the Sony W200’s fringe and macro results.
