The Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8G OS delivers a decent overall performance, especially at focal lengths below 130mm. The center never disappoints throughout the focal range but the corners need some stopping down for good performance at focal lengths above 130mm. The resolving-power in the image-center is even good enough to use a tele-converter should you need to reach beyond the 200mm focal length. The image stabilization and the AF are OK but nothing to rave about, and a maximum magnification of around 1:8 and the size and weight does not differentiate this zoom from its competition.

So, is there a situation where you should consider buying the Sigma 70-200/2.8? Well, yes! It’s the cheapest way to get a stabilized 70-200mm zoom that offers a maximum aperture of f2.8. And think about how important border/corner-sharpness is with your type of photography: You may well find that many times out-of-focus effects especially at larger apertures mask any flaws in the outer areas of your images.

So especially considering the price the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8G OS is an attractive offer and thus earns a Recommended rating. A one-on-one comparison with its competitors from Nikon and Tamron will be presented in my up-and-coming 70-200mm shootout.

Summary Good points Good center performance. Image stabilization. Quiet and fast AF operation. Bad points Needs stopping down to f5.6 or f8 to lift border-/corner-performance at longer focal lengths. AF not always spot-on. No weather sealing.
