To compare real-life performance we shot the same scene with the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX35 and the Fujifilm FinePix F30 within a few moments of each other using their Auto modes, best quality JPEG and lowest ISO settings. The lenses on each camera were adjusted to deliver the same field of view.

The image left was taken with the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX35 at 7 mm f4.5 and with a sensitivity of 100 ISO; the original JPEG measured 4.65 MB. The crops are taken from the upper left, center, lower right and lower left portions of the originals and presented here at 100%.

As a lower resolution camera, the Fujifilm F30’s crops show a larger area. Indeed as a 6 Megapixel model, it falls well below the FX35’s 10 Megapixel resolution in terms of numbers, but we’ve used it for our comparison here as it still represents benchmark performance for a compact.

Judging from the 100% crops below, there are very few areas in this real life image where the FX35 is resolving appreciably greater detail than the Fujifilm. The markings on the tennis courts in the third row are arguably slightly better defined on the FX35 samples, but it’s certainly a close-run thing. It proves that having more Megapixels doesn’t necessarily guarantee visibly greater detail in real-life situations. We can measure the difference in our studio tests – see next page – but the differences on real-life results can be subtle to say the least.

In terms of other image quality aspects, the FX35 is noticeably softer in its extreme top left corner than the F30, although the Fujifilm exhibits very slight evidence of coloured fringing in a handful of areas where the Panasonic is clean. Now to see those resolution differences in greater detail, check out our FX35 studio resolution results page.
