The following images were taken with the Nikon 18-35/3.5-4.5G on a D800. Each image was recorded in RAW and converted with Lightroom 4.4 at Camera Standard settings. Noise-reduction was set to 0, sharpening to 70/0.5/36/10, no extra tone, color, or saturation-adjustment was used. You can click on each image to access the large original. The following shot shows what happens if you’re shooting with the sun in your frame. This is one of the worst flares that I could produce with this lens. Of 33 shots under similar conditions 6 showed comparable flare and 3 others were slightly affected. This on the other hand means that about 2/3 of the shots showed no sign of flare or ghosting which is not bad under these adverse conditions. There’s also no veiling glare in this image and the blacks are really black. That’s a pretty good result.

Flare/Glare: shot with Nikon AF-S 18-35/3.5-4.5G at 24mm f11 on a D800
24mm, f11, 1/250 sec, 100 ISO

You can even produce some Bokeh with this lens: zoom in to 35mm and get close to your subject like with the following tulips. But it’s nervous with outlining clearly showing:

Tulips: Bokeh shot with Nikon AF-S 18-35/3.5-4.5G at 35mm f4.5 on a D800
Main image and all 50% crops: 35mm, f4.5, 1/400 sec, 100 ISO
