To measure and compare the Nikon D60’s resolving power we photographed the Enhanced Digital Camera Resolution Chart with it and a number of rival cameras, each using their best quality JPEG and default image tone and sharpening settings. Each camera was tested at every aperture setting and the best result selected for this page. The crops are taken from the original images, saved as High Quality JPEGs in Photoshop CS2 and presented here at 100%. Each number represents 100 lines per picture height (lpph), so a figure of 20 means a resolution of 2000 lpph. |
In terms of resolving power, the Nikon D60 delivers 2150 lpph of horizontal and vertical resolution respectively, which is identical to the D40x in these tests. This is not surprising since both share the same sensor, although the D60 does employ slightly different image processing and was equipped with the new VR version of the kit lens. Indeed if you look very closely, it could be argued the D60’s moiré comes in slightly sooner than the D40x and that its studio resolution results below are fractionally lower, but it’s so close to call that we’re happy to say they are essentially the same in this respect. Whether scoring 2150 lpph or a fraction less though, this is still a great result for the D60 which ranks amongst the best of the 10 Megapixel DSLRs we’ve tested in terms of studio resolution – a decent result, especially for a budget model with a budget kit lens. When shooting our resolution target in RAW (and converted using ViewNX), the figure also increased slightly to 2200 lpph. Now let’s see how the D60 performs in our real-life noise results. |
