The sequence below was shot at 7fps, so the ten frames represent about a second and a half of action. We used Continuous AF with 21-point Dynamic AF. The crops above are taken from the second image in the sequence.

Now check out our verdict!

The following images were taken with a final production Nikon D300s, running firmware 1.0 (for A and B) and equipped with a Nikkor DX 16-85mm VR lens.

The Nikon D300s was set to Large Fine JPEG mode (optimised for Quality), Auto White Balance, 3D Colour Matrix Metering, and the Standard Picture Control. High ISO NR and Active D-Lighting were set to their default Normal and Off settings respectively. VR Stabilisation was enabled for all these handheld shots.

The individual exposure mode, file sizes, shutter speeds, aperture, ISO and lens focal length are listed for each image.

The crops are taken from the original files, reproduced at 100% and saved in Adobe Photoshop CS4 as JPEGs with the Very High quality preset, while the resized images were made in Photoshop CS4 and saved with the default High quality preset. The three crops are typically taken from far left, central and far right portions of each image.

Note: you may wish to open a number of galleries for direct comparison of detail and noise: Canon EOS 50D sample images, Nikon D300 sample images, Canon EOS 5D Mark II sample images, Nikon D90 sample images.
