Outdoor resolution / Studio resolution / High ISO Noise / Noise Reduction
The Canon EOS 1000D / XS offers High ISO Noise Reduction, although it’s disabled by default.
To compare the effect of Noise Reduction, we photographed our High ISO Noise composition with and without High ISO NR at each setting in the sensitivity range.
The entire composition can be seen in the image left, and the crops are taken from an area in the very middle of the image.
The image above was taken with the Canon EOS 1000D / XS at a sensitivity of 100 ISO, using the EF-S 18-55mm IS kit lens at 18mm f8; the original Large Fine JPEG file measured 3.02MB.
Like the EOS 40D and EOS 450D / XSi before it, the impact of High ISO NR is certainly subtle with this composition, but small differences can be seen in shadow areas at the highest sensitivities. Chroma noise is arguably a little lower with Noise Reduction applied at the higher sensitivities, subtly at 800 ISO but more noticeably at 1600 ISO.
If you shoot compositions with a lot of shadow detail at very high sensitivities, there could be some benefit to applying the Noise Reduction, but from these examples it’s not like night and day. Now let’s have a look at some more real-life examples including several low-light indoor compositions in our Canon EOS 1000D / XS sample images gallery.
