Canon EOS 400D / Digital Rebel XTi review

Canon EOS 400D / Rebel XTi gallery

The following images were taken with the Canon EOS 400D / Rebel XTi using a variety of Canon lenses. Each image was recorded using the Large Fine JPEG mode and Standard Picture Style, while metering was set to Evaluative. The individual file size, exposure mode, shutter speed, aperture, ISO and lens details are listed for each image.

The crops are taken from the original files, reproduced at 100% and saved in Adobe Photoshop CS2 as JPEGs with the default Very High quality preset, while the resized full images were made in Photoshop CS2 and saved with the default High quality preset. The three crops are typically taken from far left, central and far right portions of each image. For examples with the EF-S 18-55mm kit lens, see our outdoor resolution and outdoor noise pages.

Harbour: 3.25MB, Aperture Priority, 1/60, f18, ISO 100, 17-85mm at 28mm (equivalent to 45mm)

Canon EOS 400D with 17-85mm lens at 28mm   Canon EOS 400D with 17-85mm lens at 28mm upper left crop   This shot was taken with the EF-S 17-85mm using a small aperture to ensure a large depth-of-field.

The crops show a high level of detail and, as you’d expect at 100 ISO, no noise.

Note: a small dust mark is visible in the sky, almost halfway across the frame and just above the mountain top.

City: 3.83MB, Aperture Priority, 1/500, f5.6, ISO 100, 70-200mm at 70mm (equivalent to 112mm)

This is one of Canon’s best quality lenses and like other EF-S bodies, the 400D avoids the outer areas. As such all the crops are very sharp and well-corrected right up to the corners.

Again there’s plenty of detail and no noise.

Portrait: 2.66MB, Aperture Priority, 1/500, f5.6, ISO 100, 17-85mm at 85mm (equivalent to 136mm)

Canon EOS 400D with 17-85mm lens at 85mm   This portrait shot was taken with the EF-S 17-85mm, zoomed-into 85mm with its aperture wide open to minimise the depth-of-field.

Once again, the 400D’s evaluative metering has delivered a well-balanced exposure and an image which is sharp and detailed.

Macro: 5.02MB, Aperture Priority, 1/50, f14, ISO 800, 17-55mm at 47mm (equivalent to 75mm)

Canon EOS 400D with 17-55mm lens at 47mm   Canon EOS 400D with 17-55mm lens at 47mm lower left crop   We switched to the EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 lens for this macro shot, moved in close to the subject and closed the aperture to f14 to ensure everything would be in focus.

With poor lighting we were forced to increase the 400D’s sensitivity to 800 ISO, and while some noise is visible on the 100% crops, it’s still very low and usable.

Night sky: 5.41MB, Manual, 30 seconds, f2.8, ISO 1600, 17-55mm at 17mm (equivalent to 27mm)

Canon EOS 400D with 17-55mm lens at 17mm   To test the 400D’s long exposure and high sensitivity capabilities we took this night sky shot using a 30 second exposure at 1600 ISO and the EF-S 17-55mm lens wide open at f2.8. Noise reduction was enabled in the Custom menu.

Some noise is unsurprisingly visible in the crops, and while worse than the 800 ISO example above, it’s still usable.

For more details on the lens used, see our EF-S 17-55mm review.
