To measure and compare the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H9’s lens vignetting and light fall-off we photographed a white target with a highly diffused custom filter using it and a number of rival super-zoom models.

Here are the results for each camera with their built-in lenses set to their widest focal lengths with the apertures wide open and the focus set to infinity.

The images were analysed with Imatest and the full areas presented here at a reduced resolution. Bigger percentages are better.

Mean corner fall-off: 68.2%
 
The image above was taken with the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H9 zoomed-out to 5.2mm with its aperture wide open. Here the light falls off in the corners to an average of 68.2% of the centre measurement, which is measurably poorer than the other three cameras here. Interestingly though the Sony result appears to not so much have dark corners as a bright middle, so in its defence you’re unlikely to notice darkening in the corners at wide angle.

Mean corner fall-off: 84.6%
 

The image above was taken with the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H9 zoomed-into 78mm with its aperture wide open. Here the light falls off in the corners to an average of 84.6%, close to the Panasonic FZ50, but this time superior to the results from the Panasonic FZ8 and Olympus SP-550UZ.
