To measure and compare the Panasonic Lumix TZ3’s resolving power we photographed the Enhanced Digital Camera Resolution Chart with it and a number of super-zoom rivals, each using their best quality JPEG and default image tone and sharpening settings. Each camera was tested with their zoom range set to approximately 3x and using every aperture setting; the best results have been selected for this page.

The crops are taken from the original images, saved as High Quality JPEGs in Photoshop CS2 and presented here at 100%. Each number represents 100 lines per picture height (lpph), so a figure of 20 means a resolution of 2000 lpph.

In terms of resolving power, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3 delivers 1700 lpph of horizontal and vertical resolution. This places it above its 5 Megapixel predecessor, but only by a very small margin – you should certainly not choose the TZ3 over the TZ1 in the hopes you’ll be recording significantly more detail.

These results also place the TZ3 roughly on-par with the Olympus SP-550UZ, but in this test Panasonic’s own Lumix DMC-FZ8 takes the lead. It measurably out-resolves the others shown here at this particular focal length, although as noted on the previous results page, it is also applying more digital sharpening with its Standard settings.
