To measure and compare the Panasonic Lumix L1’s resolving power we photographed the Enhanced Digital Camera Resolution Chart with it and a number of rival models, each using their best quality JPEG and default image tone and sharpening settings.

The crops are taken from the original images, saved as High Quality JPEGs in Photoshop CS2 and presented here at 100%. Each number represents 100 lines per picture height (lpph), so a figure of 20 means a resolution of 2000 lpph.

We tested the L1 with the Leica 14-50mm at a focal length of 25mm and at every aperture setting. The sharpest results were found at an aperture of f5.6 to f8, where the lens and body combination delivered 1900 and 1950 lpph of horizontal and vertical resolution respectively.

This result out-performs the 8 Megapixel Olympus E-500, which resolved 1800 lpph with every lens we tested it with – see our Zuiko Digital 7-14mm review. The result is also comparable to the 8 Megapixel Canon EOS 350D / Rebel XT, although unsurprisingly falls below that of the current crop of 10 Megapixel cameras. It is however close to the result from the Canon 400D / XTi, which proves how its modest kit lens can really hold back its potential.

It’s also interesting to compare the results against the Nikon D80 here and in our real-life results on the previous page though. While the D80 scores a comfortably higher resolution of 2200 lpph in these technical charts, it doesn’t translate into a significant difference in real-life.
