To measure and compare the Panasonic Lumix FZ8’s resolving power we photographed the Enhanced Digital Camera Resolution Chart with it and a number of super-zoom rivals, each using their best quality JPEG and default image tone and sharpening settings. Each camera was tested with their zoom range set to approximately 3x and using every aperture setting; the best results have been selected for this page.

The crops are taken from the original images, saved as High Quality JPEGs in Photoshop CS2 and presented here at 100%. Each number represents 100 lines per picture height (lpph), so a figure of 20 means a resolution of 2000 lpph.

In terms of resolving power, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8 delivers 1900 and 1850 lpph of horizontal and vertical resolution respectively. This places it ahead of the Olympus SP-550UZ and the little Panasonic TZ3, but Sony’s H9 manages to resolve slightly more in this studio test.

As seen on the previous page though, this doesn’t translate into the H9 resolving greater detail in real-life results. Over-aggressive noise reduction smears out any resolution benefit of the Sony H9.
