Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W200 wide-angle uniformity comparison

Sony W200 wide angle uniformity

To measure and compare the Sony Cyber-shot DSC W200's lens vignetting and light fall-off we photographed a white target with a highly diffused custom filter using it and a number of rival models.

Here are the results for each camera with their built-in lenses set to their widest focal lengths with the apertures wide open and the focus set to infinity.

The images were analysed with Imatest and the full areas presented here at a reduced resolution. Bigger percentages are better.

The image left was taken with the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W200 zoomed-out to 7.6mm with its aperture wide open.

7.6-22.8mm at 7.6mm f2.8
Mean corner fall-off: 79.3%

Here the light falls off in the corners to an average of 79.3% of the centre measurement, which is noticeably better than the Canon A640, roughly equivalent to the Fujifilm F30 and just below the Panasonic FX30 - although note the FX30 has a wider angle lens, so the fact it out-performs the others in this test is particularly impressive. Either way, you're unlikely to notice much darkening in the corners of the W200's wide angle images.

Canon PowerShot A640
Fujifilm FinePix F30
Panasonic Lumix FX30
Canon A640 wide angle uniformity
Fujifilm F30 wide angle uniformity
Panasonic FX30 wide angle uniformity
7.3-29.2mm at 7.3mm f2.8
Mean corner fall-off: 67%
  8-24mm at 8mm f2.8
Mean corner fall-off: 80.8%
  4.6-16.4mm at 4.6mm f2.8
Mean corner fall-off: 85.8%

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W200 telephoto uniformity comparison

Sony W200 telephoto uniformity

To measure and compare the Sony Cyber-shot DSC W200's lens vignetting and light fall-off we photographed a white target with a highly diffused custom filter using it and a number of rival models.

Here are the results for each camera with their built-in lenses set to their longest focal lengths with the apertures wide open and the focus set to infinity.

The images were analysed with Imatest and the full areas presented here at a reduced resolution. Bigger percentages are better.

The image left was taken with the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W200 zoomed-in to 22.8mm with its aperture wide open.

7.6-22.8mm at 22.8mm f5.5
Mean corner fall-off: 81.2%

Here the light falls off in the corners to an average of 81.2% of the centre measurement, which is only slightly better than the Canon A640 and measurably below that of the Fujifilm F30 and Panasonic FX30. Again the FX30 does very well in this test, although again you're unlikely to notice much darkening in the corners of the W200's telephoto images. Now let's have a look at some real-life examples in our Sony W200 Gallery.

Canon PowerShot A640
Fujifilm FinePix F30
Panasonic Lumix FX30
Canon A640 telephoto uniformity
Fujifilm F30 telephoto uniformity
Panasonic FX30 telephoto uniformity

Mean corner fall-off: 77.7%
  8-24mm at 24mm f5
Mean corner fall-off: 88.1%
  4.6-16.4mm at 16.4mm f5.6
Mean corner fall-off: 91.8%
