Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W200 resolution comparison

To measure and compare the Sony Cyber-shot DSC W200's resolving power we photographed the Enhanced Digital Camera Resolution Chart with it and a number of rival models, each using their best quality JPEG and default image tone and sharpening settings. Each camera was tested at every aperture setting and the best result selected for this page.

The crops are taken from the original images, saved as High Quality JPEGs in Photoshop CS2 and presented here at 100%. Each number represents 100 lines per picture height (lpph), so a figure of 20 means a resolution of 2000 lpph.

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W200 delivers 2250 lpph of horizontal and vertical resolution, which comfortably out-resolves the 10 Megapixel Canon A640 and places it above any compact we've tested so far. Its 12 Megapixel sensor really can resolve a great deal of detail both in studio and real-life environments, but before you think you've got a pocketable version of, say, the Canon EOS 5D, be aware 12 Megapixel DSLRs typically resolve closer to 2400 lpph - and of course have considerable benefits when it comes to shooting at higher ISOs. If you fancy a comparison anyway, check out the same page from our Canon EOS 5D review.

But there's no denying the Sony W200 is the highest resolution compact we've tested. Now let's have a look at the Sony W200 noise levels.
