Sony Cyber-shot DSC-R1 noise level comparison

To measure electronic noise levels
we photographed the standard Gretag Macbeth ColorChecker at each of the
camera's ISO settings. The crops are taken from the originals and presented
here at 100%. To compare typical noise in skies and dark shadows the crops
were taken from patches 3 and 24 respectively. Noise levels on the R1 viewed at 1:1 are comparable to most budget D-SLRs up to 400 ISO. The R1 becomes much noisier at 800 ISO and above though, epsecially compared to Canon's 350D. Note: the R1's higher resolution means its noise artefacts will be less noticeable than lower resolution cameras though when reproduced at the same size. |
