Sony Cybershot N2 wide-angle uniformity comparison

Sony N2 wide angle uniformity  

To measure and compare the Sony Cyber-shot N2's lens vignetting and light fall-off we photographed a white target with a highly diffused custom filter using it and a number of rival models.

Here are the results for each camera with their built-in lenses set to their widest focal lengths with the apertures wide open and the focus set to infinity.

The images were analysed with Imatest and the full areas presented here at a reduced resolution. Bigger percentages are better.

The image left was taken with the Sony Cyber-shot N2 zoomed-out to 7.9mm with its aperture wide open.

Mean corner fall-off: 79.6%
 

Here the light falls off in the corners to an average of 79.6% of the center measurement, which is an excellent result for the N2. It's roughly the same as the Fujifilm F30 and measurably ahead of the Panasonic TZ1 and especially the Canon A640.

Mean corner fall-off: 86.9%
 

Here the light falls off in the corners to an average of 86.9% of the center measurement, which again places it roughly equivalent to the leading Fujifilm F30 and ahead of its other rivals, especially the Canon A640. It's fair to say that like the Fujifilm F30, you're unlikely to notice any darkening in the corners of the N2's images at any focal length.
