Sony Alpha DSLR-A100 purple fringing comparison using DT 18-70mm f3.5~5.6

To measure and compare the Sony DSLR-A100's purple fringing caused by lens chromatic aberrations and sensor blooming, we photographed a test chart with areas of very high contrast using it and a number of rival models.

We used the bundled lenses at their widest and longest focal lengths with the apertures wide open using Aperture Priority mode. The crops are taken from the upper left corner of the chart and presented here at 100%.

The Sony DSLR-A100 with its DT 18-70mm lens exhibits a little purple fringing at its widest position in line with its rivals. Fringing is virtually absent at the 70mm end, again in line with the competition.

Sony Alpha DSLR-A100 macro comparison using DT 18-70mm f3.5~5.6

Sony Alpha A100 macro test

To measure and compare the Sony DSLR-A100's macro performance we photographed a custom chart using it and a number of rival models with their bundled lenses.

Each camera and lens was positioned at a distance and focal length which delivered the maximum possible reproduction.

The dark lines are 10mm apart and the result is not cropped. Smaller areas are preferred in this test.

The image above was taken with the Sony Alpha DSLR-A100 using the DT 18-70mm lens. Like most bundled Digital SLR lenses, the greatest macro reproduction was achieved with the lens zoomed all the way in - in this case to 70mm. Here the camera captured an area measuring 82x54mm which was better than the Sony Cybershot DSC-R1, but not as good as the Canon 350D with its 18-55mm EF-S lens. The Sony result is unsurprisingly identical to the Konica Minolta 5D, as both were essentially using the same lens.
