Sony Alpha DSLR-A100 corner sharpness comparison using DT 18-70mm f3.5~5.6

To measure and compare the Sony DSLR-A100's corner sharpness we photographed the Enhanced Digital Camera Resolution Chart with it and a number of rival models, each using their best quality JPEG and default image tone and sharpening settings. The Konica Minolta 5D and Sony Cybershot DSC-R1 were tested using our older chart, but the results are comparable.

We used the bundled lenses at their widest and longest focal lengths and with various apertures in Aperture Priority mode. The crops are taken from the extreme lower left corner of the chart and presented here at 100%.

The results below confirm the Sony DSLR-A100's bundled DT 18-70mm lens is identical to the DT 18-70mm bundled with the Konica Minolta 5D. The charts may have changed, but the corner problems at wide angle with a fully open aperture still remain.

The wide angle results improve considerably as you move into the frame, but if you want sharp corners at the 18mm focal length, you'll need to stop the aperture down. The Canon 18-55mm bundled lens performs much better here, although the clear leader is Sony's own R1 with its built-in lens - this is even more impressive considering its maximum f2.8 aperture.

Zoom-in to the telephoto end though and the situation improves dramatically. The Sony DSLR-A100 with DT 18-70mm performs much better in the corners at 70mm, exhibiting only slight softness with the aperture wide open. This is however par for the course against its rivals.

Note: crop details taken from the same chart which appear smaller here are due to them being captured with lower resolution cameras and / or a lens which couldn't focus as close to the chart. In each case though, the crop still represents the extreme left corner of each camera's frame.
