Sony Alpha DSLR-A100 resolution comparison using DT 18-70mm f3.5~5.6
|
 |
|
To measure and compare the Sony
DSLR-A100's resolving power we photographed the Enhanced Digital Camera
Resolution Chart with it and a number of rival models, each using their
best quality JPEG and default image tone and sharpening settings. The lenses
on each camera were set to f8 using Aperture Priority mode.
The Sony Cybershot R1 was tested using our older chart, but the results
are comparable. We also realise the Nikon D200 has an unfair advantage here,
tested with a prime lens, but we've included the result as it shares essentially
the same sensor as the Sony A100. |
The crops are taken from the original images, saved as High Quality JPEGs
in Photoshop CS2 and presented here at 100%. Each number represents 100
lines per picture height (lpph), so a figure of 20 means a resolution of
2000 lpph.
With 2150 lpph of horizontal and vertical resolution, the DSLR-A100 improves
on the Cybershot R1 and delivers a comfortably higher result than the
Canon EOS-350D / Rebel XT. Indeed, despite being fitted with a budget kit
lens, the Sony result is actually very close to that of the Nikon D200 fitted
with a prime lens.
It is however important to also compare real-life results, such as on the
previous page. There the Sony A100 resolves roughly the same degree of detail
as the Canon 350D. That said, in terms of our technical charts, the Sony
DSLR-A100 certainly delivered an excellent result, and one which is a considerable
improvement over 6 Megapixel digital SLRs. |
