Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX30 wide-angle geometry comparison

Panasonic FX30 wide angle geometry

To measure and compare the Panasonic Lumix FX30's geometric distortion we photographed a test chart consisting of a grid pattern, using it and a number of rival models.

Here are the results for each camera with their built-in lenses at their widest focal length; where possible, the aperture was closed.

The images were analysed with Imatest using 5th Order line calculation and the full areas presented here at a reduced resolution.

The image left was taken with the Panasonic Lumix FX30 zoomed-out to 4.6mm.

4.6-16.4mm at 4.6mm
Distortion: 2.7% barrel

Barrel distortion was measured at 2.7% which is roughly the same as the Sony N2 and slightly worse than the Canon A640; all three are noticeably worse than the Fuji F30 which wins this round. In the FX30's defence though, it offers much wider coverage when zoomed-out than the other three models here, so greater geometric distortion is expected.

Canon PowerShot A640
Fujifilm FinePix F30
Sony Cybershot DSC N2
Canon A640 wide angle geometry
Sony N2 wide angle geometry
7.3-29.2mm at 7.3mm
Distortion: 2.48% barrel
  8-24mm at 8mm
Distortion: 1.34% barrel
  7.9-23.7mm at 7.9mm
Distortion: 2.72% barrel

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX30 telephoto geometry comparison

Panasonic FX30 telephoto geometry

To measure and compare the Panasonic Lumix FX30's geometric distortion we photographed a test chart consisting of a grid pattern, using it and a number of rival models.

Here are the results for each camera with their built-in lenses at their longest focal length; where possible, the aperture was closed.

The images were analysed with Imatest using 5th Order line calculation and the full areas presented here at a reduced resolution.

The image left was taken with the Panasonic Lumix FX30 zoomed-in to 16.4mm.

4.6-16.4mm at 16.4mm
Distortion: 0.01% barrel

Pincushion distortion was measured at 0.01%, which is essentially close to a perfect score. The other three models below don't exactly have it bad in this respect, but the FX30 comfortably takes the lead. A very good result here for the FX30.

Canon PowerShot A640
Fujifilm FinePix F30
Sony Cybershot DSC N2
Canon A640 telephoto geometry
Sony N2 telephoto geometry
7.3-29.2mm at 29.2mm
Distortion: 0.35% pincushion
  8-24mm at 24mm
Distortion: 0.17% pincushion
  7.9-23.7mm at 23.7mm
Distortion: 0.38% pincushion
