Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX33 resolution comparison

To measure and compare the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX33's resolving power we photographed the Enhanced Digital Camera
Resolution Chart with it and a number of rival compacts, each using their
best quality JPEG and default image tone and sharpening settings. Each camera was tested at every aperture setting and the best result selected for this page.
The crops are taken from the original images, saved as High Quality JPEGs
in Photoshop CS2 and presented here at 100%. Each number represents 100
lines per picture height (lpph), so a figure of 20 means a resolution of
2000 lpph. |
In terms of resolving power, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX33 delivers 1950 and 2000 lpph of horizontal and vertical resolution respectively, which is a very small improvement over its predecessor - but then we are only talking about an increase on 1 Megapixel. It's interesting to note the FX33's softer-looking result here, perhaps due to different image processing - we repeated this and other shots to ensure this wasn't a testing error.
Overall, this is the kind of result we'd expect from a typical 8 megapixel compact, so no surprises here. Now let's look at the camera handles different sensitivities in our FX33 noise results.
