Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3 wide-angle uniformity comparison

Panasonic TZ3 wide angle uniformity  

To measure and compare the Panasonic Lumix TZ3's lens vignetting and light fall-off we photographed a white target with a highly diffused custom filter using it and a number of rival super-zoom models.

Here are the results for each camera with their built-in lenses set to their widest focal lengths with the apertures wide open and the focus set to infinity.

The images were analysed with Imatest and the full areas presented here at a reduced resolution. Bigger percentages are better.

4.6-46mm at 4.6mm f3.3
Mean corner fall-off: 71.5%
 
The image above was taken with the Panasonic Lumix TZ3 zoomed-out to 4.6mm with its aperture wide open. Here the light gently falls off in the corners to an average of 71.5% of the centre measurement, which is essentially the same as its predecessor. The FZ8 and Olympus Sp-550UZ both improve on these figures, but there's still little to worry about here for the TZ3.

Mean corner fall-off: 83.4%
 

The image above was taken with the Panasonic Lumix TZ3 zoomed-into 46mm with its aperture wide open. Here the light falls off in the corners to an average of 83.4%, again close to the result from its predecessor. In this test the TZ3 and TZ1 out-perform the FZ8 and SP-550UZ to deliver images with little or no perceptible darkening in the corners. Another good result for the TZ3.
