Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2 resolution comparison

To measure and compare the Panasonic Lumix LX2's resolving power we photographed the Enhanced Digital Camera Resolution Chart with it and a number of rival models, each using their best quality JPEG and default image tone and sharpening settings.

The crops are taken from the original images, saved as High Quality JPEGs in Photoshop CS2 and presented here at 100%. Each number represents 100 lines per picture height (lpph), so a figure of 20 means a resolution of 2000 lpph.

The resolution chart accommodates 16:9 aspect ratios as seen above, but the measurements represent lines per picture height which remains consistent regardless of the camera aspect ratio. As such, while the LX2 records 10.2 Megapixels across its full 16:9 frame, it's equivalent in vertical resolution to 8.5 Megapixels on a narrower 3:2 frame (similar to most DSLRs) and 7.5 Megapixels on a squarish 4:3 frame (similar to most compacts).

We tested the LX2, and each of the other cameras below at every aperture setting and selected the result which was sharpest; in the case of the LX2 at the focal length tested, this was wide open at f4.0. At this setting the LX2 resolved 1800 and 1850 lpph or horizontal and vertical resolution respectively. This is comfortably higher than the 5 Megapixel (4:3) Lumix TZ1, but the same as the 6.3 Megapixel Fujifilm F30.

As explained above, we expected the LX2 to be comparable in this test to traditional compacts between 6 and 8 Megapixels, but it's revealing it's closer to the lower end of the F30; that said, the F30 is one of the best performing compacts around, and this is apparent here not just in resolving power, but the clean image crop. The LX2 result, even at 100 ISO is quite noisy in comparison.
