Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8 wide-angle uniformity comparison

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8 wide-angle uniformity

To measure and compare the Panasonic Lumix FZ8's lens vignetting and light fall-off we photographed a white target with a highly diffused custom filter using it and a number of rival super-zoom models.

Here are the results for each camera with their built-in lenses set to their widest focal lengths with the apertures wide open and the focus set to infinity.

The images were analysed with Imatest and the full areas presented here at a reduced resolution. Bigger percentages are better.

6-72mm at 6mm f2.8
Mean corner fall-off: 79.2%

The image above was taken with the Panasonic Lumix FZ8 zoomed-out to 6mm with its aperture wide open. Here the light falls off in the corners to an average of 79.2% of the centre measurement. The Olympus SP-550UZ manages a slightly better result, but both are comfortably above the Sony H9 and Panasonic FZ8. You certainly won't notice much darkening in the corners of the FZ8 images at wide angle, but then to be fair, it also has the least wide coverage of all the cameras here.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8 telephoto uniformity comparison

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8 telephoto uniformity

To measure and compare the Panasonic Lumix FZ8's lens vignetting and light fall-off we photographed a white target with a highly diffused custom filter using it and a number of rival super-zoom models.

Here are the results for each camera with their built-in lenses set to their longest focal lengths with the apertures wide open and the focus set to infinity.

The images were analysed with Imatest and the full areas presented here at a reduced resolution. Bigger percentages are better.

6-72mm at 72mm f3.3
Mean corner fall-off: 73.1%

The image above was taken with the Panasonic Lumix FZ8 zoomed-into 72mm with its aperture wide open. Here the light falls off in the corners to an average of 73.1%, which is the worst of the four cameras shown here, although again barely visible under most circumstances.
