Panasonic DMC-FZ30 wide-angle geometry comparison

Panasonic DMC-FZ30 wide angle geometry test   To measure geometric distortion we photographed a custom test chart consisting of a grid pattern with perfectly straight lines. Here are the results for the cameras at their widest focal length with an aperture of f8 in Aperture Priority mode. The images were analysed with Imatest using 5th Order line calculation and the full areas presented here at a reduced resolution.

The image left was taken with the Panasonic FZ30 at 7.4mm f8 (equivalent to 35mm). Barrel distortion was measured at 2.35% which while better than the Canon kit lens, is comparable to the other all-in-ones.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-R1 wide angle geometry test
6.2-66.7mm at 6.2mm f8
Distortion: 2.38% barrel
  18-55mm EF-S at 18mm f8
Distortion: 3.35% barrel
  14.3-71.5mm at 14.3mm f8
Distortion: 2.9% barrel

Panasonic DMC-FZ30 telephoto geometry comparison

Panasonic DMC-FZ30 telephoto geometry test   To measure geometric distortion we photographed a custom test chart consisting of a grid pattern with perfectly straight lines. Here are the results for the cameras at their longest focal length with an aperture of f8 in Aperture Priority mode. The images were analysed with Imatest using 5th Order line calculation and the full areas presented here at a reduced resolution.

The image left was taken with the Panasonic FZ30 at 88.8mm f8 (equivalent to 420mm). Barrel distortion was measured at 0.317% which is similar to the Canon and Fujifilm results, although here the Sony R1 is the comfortable leader.
