Olympus µ 790 SW / Stylus 790 SW resolution comparison

To measure and compare the Olympus Stylus 790 SW's resolving power we photographed the Enhanced Digital Camera Resolution Chart with it and a number of rival compacts, each using their best quality JPEG and default image tone and sharpening settings. Each camera was tested at every aperture setting and the best result selected for this page.

The crops are taken from the original images, saved as High Quality JPEGs in Photoshop CS2 and presented here at 100%. Each number represents 100 lines per picture height (lpph), so a figure of 20 means a resolution of 2000 lpph.

In terms of resolving power, the Olympus Stylus 790 SW delivers 1900 and 1800 lpph of horizontal and vertical resolution respectively, which is par for the course for a 7 Megapixel compact. The Canon and Panasonic models below show the small boost you can expect from an 8 Megapixel model, while the Sony W200 results illustrate the bigger leap to 12 Megapixels.

Now let's see how the 790 SW handles different sensitivities in our Olympus 790 SW noise results.
