Olympus E-500 / EVOLT E-500 review with Zuiko Digital 14-45mm f3.5~5.6 Gordon Laing, February 2006

Olympus E-500 resolution comparison

To measure resolving power we photographed our Resolution Chart with each camera using its best quality JPEG and default image tone and sharpening settings. The E-500 was tested using our new Enhanced Digital Camera chart, while the other cameras were tested using our older chart; the results are comparable though.

The lenses were set to f8 using Aperture Priority mode. The crops are taken from the originals, saved as High Quality JPEGs in Photoshop CS2 and presented here at 100%. Each number represents 100 lines per picture height (lpph), so a figure of 20 means a resolution of 2000 lpph.

With 1800 and 1750 lpph of horizontal and vertical resolution respectively, the E-500 performs virtually identically to Canon's EOS-350D / Digital Rebel XT, with both bodies using their bundled 3x zoom lenses. The E-500 has a slight edge on horizontal resolution over the 350D, but it's a close-run. Both cameras comfortably out-resolve their 6 Megapixel rivals though.
