Nikon D40 wide-angle uniformity comparison

Nikon D40 with 18-55mm

To measure and compare the Nikon D40's kit lens vignetting and light fall-off we photographed a white target with a highly diffused custom filter using it and a number of rival models.

Here are the results for each camera with their kit lenses set to their widest focal lengths with the apertures wide open and the focus set to infinity.

The images were analysed with Imatest and the full areas presented here at a reduced resolution. Bigger percentages are better.

DX 18-55mm II at 18mm f3.5
Mean corner fall-off: 52.1%

The image above was taken with the Nikon D40 using the DX 18-55mm II kit lens zoomed-out to 18mm with its aperture wide open. Here the light falls off in the corners to an average of 52.1% of the centre measurement. This is a worse result than the other kit lenses shown here and the darkening in the corners of the frame above are quite visible.

  ZD 14-42mm at 14mm f3.5

Nikon D40 telephoto uniformity comparison

Nikon D40 with 18-55mm

To measure and compare the Nikon D40's kit lens vignetting and light fall-off we photographed a white target with a highly diffused custom filter using it and a number of rival models.

Here are the results for each camera with their kit lenses set to their longest focal lengths with the apertures wide open and the focus set to infinity.

The images were analysed with Imatest and the full areas presented here at a reduced resolution. Bigger percentages are better.

DX 18-55mm II at 55mm f5.6
Mean corner fall-off: 73.7%

The image above was taken with the Nikon D40 using its DX 18-55mm II mm kit lens zoomed-in to 55mm with its aperture wide open. Here the light falls off in the corners to an average of 73.7% of the centre measurement. Like the other lenses shown here, it's an improvement over the wide angle result, but again the Nikkor lens performs worse than its rivals here.
