Konica Minolta Dynax 5D / Maxxum 5D review with 18-70mm f3.5~5.6 DT lens Gordon Laing, December 2005

The following images were taken with the Konica Minolta Dynax 5D and the optionally bundled 18-70mm f3.5~5.6 DT lens. The recording mode was set to Large and Extra Fine, thereby using the full 6.1megapixel resolution and the least-compressed JPEG setting. The individual exposure mode, file sizes, shutter speeds, aperture, ISO and lens focal length are listed for each image.

The crops are taken from the original files, reproduced at 100% and saved in Adobe Photoshop CS2 as JPEGs with the default Very High quality preset, while the resized images were made in Photoshop CS2 and saved with the default High quality preset. The three crops are typically taken from far left, central and far right portions of each image.

City: 4.71MB, Aperture Priority, 1/400, f8, ISO 100, 18-70mm DT f3.5~5.6 at 40mm

Konica Minolta 5D with 18-70mm lens at 40mm   This shot of St Paul's Cathedral and the Millennium Bridge in London, was taken with the 18-70mm DT kit lens at 40mm f8.

As you'd expect mid-way through the focal range and at f11, the image and crops are sharp and detailed. At 100 ISO there's also no noise to speak of.

Still life: 4.34MB, Aperture Priority, 1/5, f6.3, ISO 100, 18-70mm DT f3.5~5.6 at 18mm

Konica Minolta 5D with 18-70mm lens at 18mm   Konica Minolta 5D with 18-70mm lens at 18mm middle left crop   This still-life shot taken at a fishmongers using the kit lens reveals the effectiveness of the 5D's Anti Shake capabilities.

Low light and an ISO setting of 100 forced an exposure of just 1/5 of a second. Even at 18mm, this would normally be almost impossible to handhold, yet the 5D has counter-acted any wobbles to produce a sharp image without having to resort to higher ISO settings.

City: 4.65MB, Program, 1/125, f10, ISO 100, 18-70mm DT f3.5~5.6 at 18mm

Konica Minolta 5D with 18-70mm lens at 18mm   This interior shot of the dome at Berlin's Reichstag was taken with the 18-70mm DT kit lens at 18mm f10.

With the aperture closed to f10, there are no optical problems to report, although beware of using the kit DT lens at 18mm with the aperture wide open - see results page.

At 100 ISO there's no noise to speak of.

Macro: 3.91MB, Aperture Priority, 1/125, f10, ISO 100, 18-70mm DT f3.5~5.6 at 70mm

Konica Minolta 5D with 18-70mm lens at 70mm   This shot was taken with the kit lens at 70mm and its closest focussing distance of around 20cm.

At this close distance, any motion is exaggerated and even with a shutter speed of 1/125, the Anti Shake capabilities proved valuable.

As before, at 100 ISO there's no noise to speak of.

Konica Minolta 5D with 18-70mm lens at 18mm   Konica Minolta 5D with 18-70mm lens at 18mm lower crop crop   This interior shot of the dome at Berlin's Reichstag was taken with the 18-70mm DT kit lens at 18mm f10.

As before, with the aperture closed to f10, there are no optical problems to report, and there was also sufficient depth-of-field to keep both close foreground and distant background in sharp focus.

At 100 ISO there's no noise to speak of.
