Canon EOS 30D review Gordon Laing, July 2006

Canon EOS 30D gallery

The following images were taken with the Canon EOS 30D using the commonly-bundled Canon EF-S 18-55mm lens. Each image was recorded using the Large Fine JPEG mode and Standard Picture Style, while metering was set to Evaluative. The individual file size, exposure mode, shutter speed, aperture, ISO and lens details are listed for each image.

The crops are taken from the original files, reproduced at 100% and saved in Adobe Photoshop CS2 as JPEGs with the default Very High quality preset, while the resized full images were made in Photoshop CS2 and saved with the default High quality preset. The three crops are typically taken from far left, central and far right portions of each image.

Landscape: 3.41MB, Program, 1/200, f9.0, ISO 200, 18-55mm at 18mm (equivalent to 29mm)

Canon EOS 30D with 18-55mm lens at 18mm   This shot of Lake Harris was taken on New Zealand's Routeburn Track.

The light was bright but not in the ideal direction for this composition, although the 30D's Evaluative metering coped well.

The crops show a good level of detail from the 18-55mm lens, and very low noise from the 30D.

Canon EOS 30D with 18-55mm lens at 55mm   The budget 18-55mm lens can be quite effective for portraits when zoomed-in with the aperture wide open, as seen here.

The crops aren't quite as sharp as in the first example, but they were taken with the lens aperture wide open.

For full optical results with this lens and other popular choices for the 30D, check our Canon 17-85mm review.

Canon EOS 30D with 18-55mm lens at 18mm   Canon EOS 30D with 18-55mm lens at 18mm lower left crop   This shot was taken during an earlier section of New Zealand's Routeburn Track.

Bright sunlight streaming through trees can prove a tricky combination, but again the 30D's Evaluative metering and Program mode have coped fine.

The crops are fairly sharp, especially from the middle, although a little purple fringing is visible around high contrast areas in the corners. The lens aperture was only closed by one stop though.

Macro: 3.36MB, Aperture Priority, 1/125, f32, ISO 400, 18-55mm at 55mm (equivalent to 88mm)

Canon EOS 30D with 18-55mm lens at 55mm   The EF-S 18-55mm lens doesn't pretend to be good at macro shots, but we've had fair results with it zoomed-into 55mm.

To maximise the depth-of-field here we set the aperture to f32, and increased the 30D's ISO to 400 to allow a reasonable exposure.

The crops are lacking the ultimate sharpness, but were taken at the lens's closest focusing distance, while the closed aperture would result in diffraction effects.
