Hi folks,
It's a little late in coming but I've finally created a separate thread for Canon's new PowerShot SX1 IS. This new model slipped by me initially as it isn't yet announced in the States but here goes...
From the Canon UK site:
Features
- 20x wide-angle zoom with optical IS
- 10.0 MP Canon CMOS sensor
- Full HD movies
- DIGIC 4
- Extra fast continuous shooting at full resolution (4fps)
- Face Detection and anti-blur technology
- i-Contrast
- 2.8” wide vari-angle LCD
- EX Speedlite flash compatible

EDIT: This post was originally part of the 5D MkII thread. The video referred to can be seen here. Bob Andersson.
That video is indeed impressive, though he used over 10 lenses to capture the whole movie, it's still very high quality and an impressive indication of what the new Digic IV can achieve.
I'm actually really looking forward to what the SX1 IS can do as it uses the CMOS sensor and has the same HD recording ability.
Though i can't fly to the states and order that one cheaper |

SX1? That a compactcamera?
If so, expect the HD movie mode to be meeger at best.
The reason for the 5DMkII's great IQ in video is that it takes the 21MP image and downsamples to 1080p on-the-fly.
So you get the full advantage of low noise, but when downsampling, the noise will be even harder to see.
Perfect video camera for low light. _________________ Canon EOS 5DmkII + BG-E6 + Canon EOS 40D + BG-E2N + Canon EOS 33

DD_, yes, it's one of the new compact superzooms, it also records in HD and it got a CMOS sensor to allow it to record in HD, so, as i said, even though it's lens won't be as good as the 5D, it should still be pretty good.
The making of video is quite good in showing the mounts they used, i'm sure more will be available by the time it's released. |

Its not the fact its a CMOS sensor or not, its the physical size that gives the 5DMkII's its advantage over any other diigtal video camera - thats how it gets the amazing quality.
You could shove any lens on really, e.g. the 50mm f/1.8 and still get great quality in video. Infact video should make lens faults less obvious because of the downsampling AND the fact that you can't look at the same frame for to long. _________________ Canon EOS 5DmkII + BG-E6 + Canon EOS 40D + BG-E2N + Canon EOS 33

| Oh yeah, i can't deny the larger CMOS sensor won't give it incredibly impressive quality, but the Digic IV processor and the fact that it *is* recording in HD will mean it should be the best video recording on a still camera bar this. |

Dont expect it.
D!G!C 4 means nothing.
Thats like saying Core 2...Core 2 what?
A Core 2 Solo 1.2Ghz 2/ 1Mb L2 Cache, is just a tad slower than a Core 2 Quad 3.6Ghz w/12Mb L2 Cachce
Also, HD doesn't mean much either, I've seen some crappy ass HD footage in my days =/ _________________ Canon EOS 5DmkII + BG-E6 + Canon EOS 40D + BG-E2N + Canon EOS 33

Hi folks,
The posts above were originally part of the Canon EOS 5D Mark II Official thread.
I think the SX1 deserves it's own thread and those posts were the lucky ( ) ones I selected to start this new thread off.

Um, sorry, probably my fault the 5D thread went pear shaped
Still, looking forward to someone reviewing this camera, seems that some rumours for Canon suggest the States will be getting it in spring time, along with some other P&S CMOS sensor cameras G11 anyone? |

Hi,
Can anybody tell me when the SX1 will be released in the UK?
The Canon website is saying November from memory but Dabs have said 30th October. They're not 100% on that date though.
The best price I have seen is £395.
I am moving up from a small IXUS 75. Do you think I will notice a big improvement in image quality with the SX1?
This is my first post on here so please take it easy on me |

Hi shellster,
May I offer you a warm welcome to the CameraLabs forums.
Our affiliate site Amazon UK is currently showing the camera as unavailable until November 30, 2008 and at a price of £402 including VAT and delivery.
I imagine that the IQ will be better than what you are used to but that's just speculation and we'll have to wait for the reviews to come in. But if it's image quality you value then have you looked at DSLRs as there are a number of offerings which might fit your budget. One possibility is the E-420 Double Zoom Kit (14-42mm & 40-150mm lens) giving you a 35mm equivalent zoom range from 28 to 300mm or, for a little more cash there's the Pentax K200D + 18-55mm + 50-200mm offering a similar 35mm equivalent focal range. Not to mention Canon, Nikon and Sony. Oh, I just did!
But perhaps the added inconvenience of a DSLR isn't where you want to be right now?

Thanks for your help.
I was looking at DSLR's, particularly the 40D and the Alpha 350 but they didn't have video recording which I do find handy and when I saw the SX1 did 1080p and had a 20x zoom that swung it for me. I know the quality is not going to be quite up there with DSLR's but I think the allround package of the SX1 is too tempting.
The amazon price is good, I'll have a look.
cheers,
Shellster |

These are the reasons i'm still plumping for hopefully the SX1 as well. The convenience of good quality video in the same smaller package is a strong draw, and it's what's keeping my from jumping to the entry level SLR.
Hope we get a review before release or very shortly afterwards |

I was very excited about this camera until i found out that there is no raw format available. Raw is a must have feature for me. _________________ Canon EOS 30D
