Polls closed! We have a winner! Congratulations to SolarSanction who won with a decisive 23% of the votes. In second place mikeroch, and in third, Alan. As always, the winner, SolarSanction, gets to choose the theme for next month's assignment, and has until the end of November to tell us! SolarSanction, please let us know the theme in the October Comments and Questions thread here:

http://www.cameralabs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=18006

Thanks!

Gordon

Midnight 31st October 2009 - SUBMISSIONS CLOSED!

VOTE FOR YOUR FAVOURITE!

Hi everyone! Welcome to October's Assignment!

The theme for this month is "series", as suggested by Bjorn who won the August 2009 competition. Be sure to read this whole message for the rules, because this assignment is a bit different from previous ones!

In Bjorn's own words:

"This month's Assignment is a little different. How? There is no theme. You can choose your own theme, but, don't get too excited yet. Here's what's expected from your entry:

What I want you to do is present a series. A what? A series,
two or three photos (no more, no less) that combine to show
a single story; they are different in many ways (e.g. picture
elements, composition, colour), but stongly connected to one
another through their story. That connection can be interpreted
in many ways, as long as it is the story or general subject that
links the photos. Preferably, you'd show a set of images that
are not only very much alike in story, but in atmosphere too
(mood, post-processing), since it will make your series as a whole
more powerful, giving it a better chance to win (hopefully!)."

Bjorn has provided a longer explanation with some examples in this thread: http://www.cameralabs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=154583

The rules!

1: You need to submit two or three images and they have to be taken during October 2009. Photos taken earlier will be disqualified!

2: All images submitted must be no more than 500 pixels on their longest side, although you can include a link to a full resolution version if you like. Flickr users must link back to the original version to comply with its latest rules.

As always, please exercise good judgement on what is suitable for the forum. See the Forum Rules for guides.

Please include a sentence or two with your photo describing what you were trying to achieve and if there were any particular challenges in doing so like, for example, any special exposure or lighting setup.

We're all enthusiasts here, so it's also great to see what equipment you used and the settings too. So please also include the following:

Camera Model:
Lens and focal length:
Aperture:
Shutter Speed:
Sensitivity:
Post processing:

Submissions will close at midnight GMT on 31st October 2009. The final poll will follow.

Please remember this thread is for submissions only. If you'd like to comment on any of the submissions or ask any questions, please do so in the October 2009 Comments and Questions thread!

Thanks and good luck!

Gordon

Bjorn, not sure if this is what you have in mind.... but here goes. Hope you like it.
I am calling this series the TEST OF TIME...

THE TEST OF TIME.

Today, I went to the Getty Villa, a museum overlooking Malibu, and all things Pacific..wish you could have been there, it was a gorgeous day..The Villa holds vast treasures..but what struck me is that
Time, that elusive mistress, changes everything!
The leaves as they get ready to fall, and let go of their perch, yet the roots for the next generation, are set in stone.
Next, the beauty of the Muses. She is forever etched cool marble colored in ancient days, still gazing, looking for you. She is ravaged by time, yet her eternal beauty, finds your eye...lost in the curve of her face.
The mosaic, broken, yet some how manages to still "BE"...little tiny parts, fragments, chips, distorted by time, yet pieces, put together, make a "picture".
All standing the TEST OF TIME.
I will post the settings..

love,
p

This is a beautiful baby girl, that was playing in her great grandmother's beautiful old home. By the end of the evening she was barely awake, peering out through the spindles on the staircase. I posted this size because the photos in the collage were smaller than required, but if anyone has a problem with it I will post smaller.

Hello everyone, first time poster here.

I found Cameralabs.com while researching the jump from P&S to DSLR and want to thank Gordon and everyone involved in this site for a ton of really helpful information.

Over the past year I've enjoyed my new camera so much and I've finally decided the time was right to challenge myself by taking part in the On Assigment.

I tried originally to capture three meals over the course of a day, but just couldn't get it right. Today, my wife and girl were making cupcakes for her birthday party tomorrow so I just picked up the camera and started snapping away.

So that's the story really...Lily's First Cupcakes.

Here's a mini slideshow. It's appropriate if they're supposed to tell a story, right?

Camera Model: Canon Rebel Xs
Lens and focal length: 18-55mm, 18mm, 18mm, 24mm
Aperture:f3.5, 3.5, 4.0
Shutter Speed:1/30, 1/40, 1/25
Sensitivity:400, 400, 400
Processing: iPhoto sliders all over the place

Downtown Rotterdam is not what I'd think of first when looking for a safe location to shoot at night, but it certainly is very interesting. I shot a good friend near the Maassilo (google if you wish). My story? I wanted to show how kids grown up in this area grow up. Nick isn't from this area, but that isn't really the point... Smile

Please look at the larger files! Very Happy
