I recently was able to get my hands on both 24mm and 45mm PC-E lenses (on DX). With perspective control, one can modify the focus plane (tilt) and image circle (shift).

I was able to spend several days with them, and wound up buying the 45mm version. Here is one of the shots taken with the 45mm f/2.8, handheld:


Here is a crop of the horizon on this shot: Remember, this is 2.8 handheld!


I tried to get the focus plane as horizontal as possible in this shot so that it would match the road to horizon.

If anyone has some experience with tilt and shifts, or would like to talk about it, feel free to comment!

By the way, if Gordon is reading this, I'd like to say that I loved the Nikon 50mm f/1.4 review, which is what got me to share this.

Thanks for sharing with us. I like the idea of owning a tilt & shift lens but somehow never manage to justify the cost.

Yes, the tilt & shifts aren't cheap, but also not prohibitively expensive, in my opinion. I do not own D300 or D700 by Nikon, but these two combined cost as much as the entire tilt & shift line-up. If you can justify D300, then perhaps it's not such a stretch to justify the ability to control the focus field (more than just vertically) and the image circle.

The cost may be harder to justify as one will be using the body more often than what is a specialist lens. Tilt-shifts can be fantastic for architectural photography, and less useful when it comes to generalised photography. It depends on use for a complete justification for investment.

Was there any difference between them other than the focal lenght? I´m dreaming of buying one of these, but then I´d have to save for a whole year... Is the 45 mm "easier" to use because of its focal lenght?

Really jealous of you man, in a few years I think that I too will have a tilt and shift lens. (When I finish school and get a real job that is)
