Installed and running. 1st impressions are it's Vista with changes (which I guess should not be a surprise) but I don't know what those changes are exactly. Well, only one. If the options to turn things back to XP style are in there, they've hidden them. Suppose I should try running stuff on it.

Hi Popo, great you've got it installed, congratulations, what spec system are you using? Also what are any bugs you have noticed in first use, and please do let us know about any bugs, i will to! I am getting really fed up with Vista at the moment, but for now i am just going to install it on a partition on my HD, but i may consider, deleting that partition and 'upgrading' Vista, and using W7 as my main OS, although only IF it has very few bugs...etc!

PC is thrown together from various old bits. Spec is:
C2D E6600
2GB ram
40GB HD
7300GT 128MB

Speed seems ok so far, but that's with nothing else installed yet. I have done all windows updates which consisted of a couple driver updates. I manually applied the fix for mp3 corruption that's widely reported.

Reminds me a lot of Vista in look and feel. Taskbar is only obvious difference. There is also the usual ton of protection stuff and warnings MS wants to turn on but it does so less annoyingly before.

I really should put some apps on it to get a better feel.

Yeh, well maybe download a trial of LR 2, or something! I really need to upgrade my laptop, lol! C2D 1.6, 1GB RAM, 128MB ATI, 120GB, so will be interesting to see how it performs on a low spec system! People have had it running on Asus Eee PC's etc!

Only done a light test so far. I still think it's Vista but slightly different. So for Vista haters I can't see this being that different.

Anyway, Photoshop elements 7 installed and runs, likewise picasa. Currently I got boinc running and will have to see if it impacts the throughput or even improves it.

Things that didn't work - ultravnc. I haven't looked into it yet but I can run the user mode server and connect to it, but don't get screen updates. There is a X64 version but it didn't come with an installer so maybe that's something to do with it as I've only got 32 installed.

I found out why Aero wasn't working for me, apparently VMware does not have the WDDM drivers required yet. I guess it's only a matter of time.

I agree with popo on how it's very similar to Vista. I thought Vista was actually quite good as far as features and usability were concerned but fell flat on performance and reliability. If MS fixes that in 7, I'd be quite happy but then again I'm a Mac user and plan to stay one so it's not me they need to impress. 8)

I'm thinking of installing it in bootcamp and running GeekBench to see how it stacks up against OSX in the only cross-platform benchmark utility I can think of.

Popo, what do you think of the new taskbar? IMO, it's kinda like a speed limit on fast multitasking, I don't like it very much.

I prefer the Win2k style taskbar with quicklaunch, which you can largely tune XP and Vista back to. I haven't found out how to do it in Win7 yet, if it is at all possible. So I'm not a good judge for that.

I do note they kinda copied the OS X style single button shortcut/application restore like function. But I don't like that either.

Ok, have got it installed, seems similar to Vista (but then it is just meant to be an updated version of Vista! Anyway, is seems quicker and the performance is generally better under 7 than Vista. I have downloaded a LR 2 trial and installed it, seems to be MUCH quicker under Windows 7, just basic things like switching from develop to library, and going from grid view, to the full image view are also quicker! So this has told me that W7 improves greatly on CPU performance on the same Processor compared to Vista!

Image

Loading from previews seems to be the same to me, but that really uses the RAM not CPU, and i only have 1GB of ram, which i hopefully will upgrade to 2GB soon!

Ok in general performance terms, just browsing the internet, etc seems to be generally more responsive and quicker!
Popo, i am going to have to disagree with you there, as i really like the new UI! Although one thing i have noticed which i really like is the fact it shows you the progress of your dowload on the icon, and sort of a large green bar goes across the IE icon, to tell you the progress of your download! Also i have found Aero peek VERY useful in the short couple of hours i have been using W7, i must have used it 15 times or so!
I will update you guys on how i get on, soon!
Thanks

Hi folks,

It looks as though Microsoft has thrown away the 2.5 million limit on the number of W7 beta testers. The download site is up and running again and is here.

Bob.

I know they've come under criticism for not providing sufficient availability, but I managed to download the 32-bit version at ungodly speed yesterday. The 64-bit page kept returning errors, but it's downloading now...

Sadly deadlines mean I won't be trying it out for a couple of weeks yet, so I look forward to reading what you really earyl adopters make of it!

Be good to also hear about any specific hardware / device incompatibilities or issues you're experiencing...

Personally I've given up on it for now. I know it's beta, but there are too many rough edges for me. Stuff not working with UAC, other stuff not working if you turn off too. Not writing it off, but certainly I'll let it mature a bit more first. I've put a real OS back on my test box. Win2k :D
