Hello,

First post and first question.

I have a Nikon d80 and am thinking of buying the Sigma 10-20 mm lense. My question is will the Nikon Xd sensor increase the mm of the Sigma by 1.5 turning the 10-20 into a 15-30mm?

In a nutshell, yes

But remember that you are not gaining focal length, but instead gaining a view perspective of a 15-30mm lens attached to a full-frame DSLR.

As to your question: You will shoot images with the 10-20mm on a D80 like with a 15-30mm on a FF/FX/35mm-film-camera.
It is the widest lens that you can get for the D80!

The d80 and digital photography are a bit new to me and I read somewhere that the d80 will increase focal length on non XD lenses. So I thought that the d80 it will increase the Sigma from 10mm to 15 while I want to shoot at 10mm. So if I am getting this right you guys are saying that wont happen and I will still have 10mm.

Put simply:

A 10mm lens on a DX body (eg. D80) will be narrower (less of the scene appears on the sensor) than a 10mm lens on a FF/FX body (eg; Nikon D3)

i.e. More of the scene will appear on the sensor of the FF/FX body than on the DX body when using the same lens at the same focal length from the same shooting position.

Absolutely no focal range increase takes place... nada.

So this lense will be useless to me cause I want it to go wider instead of narrower.

Another question if you guys could please anwser. Would the same thing happen to the Sigma on a Sony Alpha 300?

Yep, and the Canon 40D/50D etc.
As long as it's a so called APS-C sensored body.

as said before: 10mm is the widest lens you can get for any cropped frame sensor (leaving fisheye's aside). And every camera below ~3000$ WILL be a cropped frame So yes: GET one, 10 (or 15mm Fullframe equivalent if you want) is really wide allreade!

Ok thanks guys, I finally used some of those gray cell in my noggin' and figured out how it works.

... In the world of photography, there's no such thing as a free lunch. You always have to sacrifice something to gain something when it comes to photography. Compromise, compromise, compromise. But that's the fun thing about photography.

B.T.W - I'm really enjoying my Sigma 10-20mm. As long as you don't get a bad sample, you won't regret getting this lens.

Yep got the Sigma and it is great. I wrote above I have a D80 but I was considering getting it, but went for the Alpha 300 instead. Works great on the Alpha.

Accept the fact the the widest is 15mm (1.5 cropped). Keeping in mind this is still slightly better than canon's aps-c which is 1.6 making it 16mm.

Why would you want to go wider? The distortion will exponentially worsten with cropped frames if you go wider.

I've been looking at getting the 10-20mm for my canon 40d, but i already have the kit 17-85mm, on a cropped body is the 2mm really worth me buying it, ie would i notice a big difference or should i save my money?
