I'm looking for a laptop with at least and 80GB hard drive and 1GB RAM for as low a price as possible in the UK. It will be mainly for taking with me on trips for storing and viewing photos, surfing the net and to keep me occupied on long journies etc.

It doesn't need powerful graphics, as I won't be playing games on it much and it doesn't need to be capable of anything but the smallest of post processing tasks as I will do most of this on my main PC. A built in wireless adapter is desirable but not required. I would like as long a battery life as possible.

I am willing to save money on the operating system by running Linux, as I am familiar with it. The ASUS Eee doesn't have enough storage for what I'm looking for and I'd rather not carry around an external hard drive with me.

Any ideas for models or places to buy?

I've been looking at the Acer Aspire 5315 (http://www.ebuyer.com/product/139023). Does anyone know if it's any good?

I was in the same position late last year and, don't laugh, I went to Comet. I did my research online and the Comet deal was the best I could find. You say you don't mind running Linux but you're paying for Windows Vista so you should be able to run it smoothly. 1GB won't do that, especially without a dedicated graphics card. The link to the one I bought is below. 2GB RAM, 160GB HD, Intel Dual-core processor. I've had mine for near on eight months with no problems so far. It seems well built for the money and they're a reputable name. A bit more expensive than your selection but I feel you get what you pay for and £300 just isn't enough, in my opinion.

I bought an Acer Aspire 9302AWSMi Laptop last year around May/June time from "Tesco's" for £499.

It is running Vista Home Premium in 1Gb of Ram (with no problems) has a AMD Turion 64 2.2 GHz processor, a 120 Gb hard drive and a 17" Acer CrystalBrite LCD Screen for the money I don't think you can go wrong, just check Tesco's web site as this model might be available now.

Well I would recommend an Asus Eee PC 1000H, costs around 450 euros. I dont really know any UK online stores. But maybe u can try Amazon.co.uk ^^

It has an Intel Atom N270 (2 physical cores), 1GB DDR2 Ram (u can add one more easily), 160GB harddrive, 10" Screen (its light and easy for travels) and Windows XP Home. (in my opinion Vista is 10x worse than XP)

And it has 6 or 8 hrs battery time
