Yeah, I've read PC World mag a few times, although I tend to buy .net or PCGamer/Zone/Format mostly (depends on who has a review / preview I'm looking for)

I do read loads of hardware stuff on the net, but i'll pick up the mag today if they have it in the shop (got £30 lying about so, meh lol) and indeed i'll have a read (I'm hoping they still have this months .net in stock!! i forgot to buy it!)

Slightly off topic but does anyone remember a magazine called GHz? That was an excellent magazine. Gone now, sadly. R.I.P.

Yeah, I remember that one - it was pretty good...

Back in the days when I was editing PCW in the late 90s there were an enormous number of PC magazines on the UK newstands - it was crazy and unsustainable. Sadly (or perhaps fortuitously for the survivors!), many inevitably closed. Today there seem to be an awful lot of digital camera mags, so I wonder if we'll experience a similar boom and bust in that market...

Here's hoping. Honestly there's no need for it. It's also false when they suggest this is giving the consumer more choice - generally if Nikon release a new camera it's tested in all the mags the same month and they all rate it the same. What's the point? The same is true in the car magazine market. Sadly I still buy them all anyway. Particularly Evo.

One magazine that really has lost the plot is PC Format. Absolute rubbish these days. I wouldn't mind if the price was reasonable but as it is it's about £6, no doubt down to "all the fantastic goodies on the cover DVD". Leave the DVD, it's all available for free on the internet anyway.

I am not very up on my PC hardware or software so apologies for the basic questions.

I am thinking of getting a new laptop for home after our PC (5+ years old) died a while back and we have been using work laptop for most things.
I just want to be able to do a few things - edit and store photos, general admin and web stuff that will last a reasonable time. With maybe a little light gaming.

What would you recommend Vista/XP, 1 or 2 GB RAM?

I have been thinking about getting VIsta as this will be the platform for PCs for the coming few years and I was thinking about getting 1 GB RAM as I won't be a very heavy user but reading here it sounds that if I can stretch to it 2 GB might be better.

Yeah, I've mostly been using XP, for compatability, and stability sake, apart from the fact I just play about with the Aero Glass lol, even though I've used it for almost 3 years now, never gets old; So what happens is, I open photoshop to do some web design, and I end up getting nothing done at all. XP on the other hand feels more business like, a place I can get work done in.

I always wanted to write for a PC magazine, thought it would be a great job since I read to excess, all about computer hardware, and other random things like flexable OLED displays, and IBM making 19inch screens with 4xxx X 3xxx pixel displays.

Laptop - MacBookPro 15inch, never go wrong. If not, Apple, Asus and IBM are the only 3 types of laptop i'd get!

Core 2 Duo T7400 or above.
1/2GB DDR2 667Mhz Ram
GeForce 7400,7600,8400,8500,8600 Graphics Cards
15inch 16:10 1440x900 or if possible 1680x1050 screen.

Thats about it, follow those specs for a laptop you won't go wrong.

I've got 4GB in my main system and due to 32-bit addressing, Vista 32-bit loses about 800MB of it to devices - so you only get to use about 3.2GB. I just installed 64-bit Vista though and it gets to use all 4GB. The extra problem though are 32-bit aps and how much they can use. I'm doing some research and tests for a futue PCW column...

Vista is a much better OS then XP, the only REAL problem you will have is if you are a HARDCORE gamer....as the drivers and conflicts start with HIGH END gear.

I build PCs for a hobby and I have a VERY HIGH end rig, I have built so many rig and never had one FAILURE.... But I play in online tournaments etc....so I need the latest hardware and I am a gadget FREEK
