Hi Guys, Can someone clarify this point for me. Is 40D weatherproof or not? Canon's web site list all the important features but doesn't mention the weatherproof factor. Thanks.

My understanding is that it isn't weatherproof but it isn't so isn't weatherproof as the 30D. I believe areas like the CF door have been improved.

I think that's just not acceptable. They don't have a single weatherproof camera under $4500. It's so lame. For about 5 days I've been at the Bonneville Salt Flats for a motorcycle time trials event. I have a 30D with me, which although it's a good camera, can easily get ruined here. What is up with Canon. I like Canon and most guys here are on Canons and almost all pros, except for 1 were on Canon's, but if a camera is not sealed, it's not a pro's tool. D300 is looking real good right now. However, there is an advatnage on being on Canon, because most use them you can swap lenses, borrow batteries, flashes and so on.

One of the press guys has a sweet 5D. But again, that cam is not weatherproof.

And there isn't a thing we can do about it. Unless Canon comes out with a direct competition for the D300 with a $1800 weatherproof cam.

Hi SHIVA,

Great pics, great event.

Having already accidentally invested in two weather sealed lenses (24-105L and 70-200L) I agree it would certainly have been nice had the 40D included this feature, though it has apparently been improved in this regard. Can't say it has been terribly highly on my personal wish list but those that need it obviously miss it.

Wouldn't it be nice if Canon have included this feature on the 5D replacement as a response to any intelligence they may have had about the D300? They have the know how so I guess the decision rests on their perception of the market.

Bob.

Bob, Thanks. I agree, Canon should make the next gen 5D weatherproof. They are so worried that their lowered priced cams would then compete with the 1D series. But now with Sony and Nikon both offering sealed bodies at 1200 and 1800, I hope Canon starts sweating soon and get on the ball.

I played with the 40D, it feels more pro than the 30D and the view finder is a lot better. Also the 6.5 FPS sounds a lot quicker than the 5. Overall looks impressive. The screen is larger, but unless it will perform better in day light, I would not be impressed. But a nice camera indeed, they'll sell boat loads of them. Real nice. :) S

Hi SHIVA, as far as the 40D's weather-sealing is concerned, over and on top of what you got with the 30D, it now features rubber strips around the CF card and battery compartment doors, along with a plastic perimeter around the hotshoe over which models like the 580 EX II can make a perfect seal.
