One I had considered for an entry in a challenge for "play" it would have been titled "Don't Play With Your Food".

I was thinking of the AF Micro- NIKKOR 60mm f/2.8D I think this will do well on my D40.

I'm undecided yet... But the final is the Tamron 90mm 2.8 vs. Sigma 105mm f2.8... In the reviews both are better than the Sony 100mm 2.8, so that's why I don't consider the Sony one... In the last week of November I'll make my choise...

Mark, this is a great photo. I love taking pics of insects and spiders. I had a similar spider just a day after I got my camera. This looks like a Barn Spider or Common Orb Weaver. These are my pics (handheld).

Using the blackboard makes a very strong background. These are the kinds of tricks I am learning on this forum. I noticed in another thread a member recommended using a higher f-stop to keep more of the spider in focus. Is this something you have tried? I can certainly see the difference in your pics with your macro lens compared to my shots using the telephoto. Great pic and nice technique. It may be time for a Spider Specific thread since these are such great subjects.
