Thanks Gordon for creating this new Forum section.

I'd like to share some pics taken with my Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM lens, mounted on a Canon 400D.

This was my first prime lens purchase and wanted to experience the creative influence of 'zooming with your feet', large aperture/low DOF shots and low light shots. I think it also offers a great 'one lens' solution when traveling when you don't want to weigh yourself down with all your other lenses.

Many choose the 50mm f1.8 when considering a Canon prime at this focal length. I understand that this lens largely offers the same image quality but I decided to stretch my budget as I really wanted the overall better build quality.

The one criticism I have is the slightly loose, inaccurate feel of the focus ring, although I can't fault the USM auto focus. It's just that sometimes I switch my camera to full manual and focusing could be smoother. It seems that this is common with modern lenses however to accommodate auto focusing (I may be wrong tho :?). Maybe I've also been spoilt with my old Pentax KM with it's silky smooth and pin sharp 50mm lens :-).

In short, I've been very happy with this lens. I find it offers very sharp images with lovely colour and saturation, quick focusing, low weight and fairly solid construction.

Nice captures there Roland, thanks for sharing them.

I liked the breadphoto. You usually dont get to see much foodphotos that come out very well, but this one did.

If you have the chance to share some indoor photos in low lights both with and without flash it would be great.

/K

It's just the lens that counts here!

I've tested 50mm 1,8 on 350D :P don't find it really useful. If have money left and don't know where to spend :D 1,8 and 1,4 is okej to buy for fun ^^ not an overkill.

But for 50mm 1,2 L that's like overkill price! :P hehe

Well I sold my 1.8 MK II and got this lens after hearing much praise about it, and having just gone full frame with a lightly-used 5D. I love this lens on a full-frame body. Now it actually IS a walkabout lens for me. Will post some good examples when I get them.

I think I will get a 1.8 soon. Is there really a difference between 1.8 and 1.4?

Here is one taken today, it shows ex GWR Castle 5043 "Earl Of Mount Edgecombe" on 1Z43 07.55 Birmingham Snow Hill-Kensington Olympia Christmas Shopper.
Weather conditions were absolute crap hence the high ISO.

Just got this today, and thought i would try it on my friends dads (shhhhhh. he doesn't know) 5dMkII.

the bokeh is amazing from this lens. unfortunately, It was VERY dark. I was at f1.4 the whole time, and you can still see some camera shake in some shots. Also, f1.4 creates a very small focal plane, so there are some shots that are a little out of focus.

Full size images can be downloaded from my Flickr (in signature)

Just got my camera (50D) today along with the 50 mm f/1.4 and 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 and snapped some shots while outside. This is my first digital SLR so I definitely have a lot to learn.
