92 votes have been cast and we have a winner! Congratulations to shallowlife on a win with 13% of the votes! Shallowlife now has until the end of November to name the theme for December's Assignment, plus any conditions like allowing post processing, montages etc. Shallowlife, please let us know your theme and rules in the October 2008 comments thread by midnight GMT on 30th November - preferrably a bit earlier so we can get our thinking caps on!

As always, thanks to everyone who entered, especially the first-timers - and congratulations also to Tomis who came second with 6% of the votes, and Khol, katiebug0376, Bjorn van Sinttruije, supervillain, Maxxxheat and Camut who all came joint third with 5% of the votes.

Congratulations to everyone who entered, especially as always our first-time entrants...

Hello everyone, welcome to October’s Assignment!

The theme for this month is “Self-portraiture”, as suggested by Zorro who won the August 2008 competition. In Zorro’s own words:

...with a difference. I'm personally not too comfortable with photographing myself and I'm guessing I'm not alone. So this assignment allows a more lateral approach. Present an image which represents you. It could be a straight-forward portrait shot or it could be anything you like. As long as it represents what you believe to be your true self. Any and all editing is acceptable, go at it!

Maybe not what some were expecting but it's a subject I'm not good at myself so it'll be a test for us all. Remember, the voting here is purely subjective and with this topic who's to say how it could have been done better?

Have fun.

So there you have it, the theme for October is Self-portraiture, and as always the image you submit has to be taken during the month of entry – that is, taken during October 2008. Photos taken on an earlier date do not qualify! And remember, all images submitted here MUST be no more than 500 pixels on their longest side.

Good luck!

1: The photo you submit should be taken during the month of the actual assignment - so for this month's contest, it must be taken during October 2008.

2: You're only allowed to submit one image, and you can't change your mind once it's posted!

3: Images should be no larger than 500 pixels on their longest side.

As always, please exercise good judgement on what is suitable for the forum.

Please include a sentence or two with your photo describing what you were trying to achieve and if there were any particular challenges in doing so.

We're all enthusiasts here, so it's also great to see what equipment you used and the settings too. So please also include the following:

Camera Model:
Lens and focal length:
Shutter Speed:
Post processing:

Submissions will close at midnight GMT on 31st October 2008. The final poll will follow.

Please remember this thread is for submissions only and that posted images should be around 500 pixels on their longest side. If you'd like to comment on any of the submissions or ask any questions, please do so in the October 2008 comments thread!

Thanks and good luck!

Camera Model: Nikon D80
Lens and focal length: Nikkor 50mm f1.8D
Aperture: f/1.8
Shutter Speed: 1/15 sec
Sensitivity: 200 ISO
Post processing: I like to up the contrast, blacks, and a tiny bit of saturation, as well as a tiny bit of vignetting. It kind of my style. (Lightroom 2.0)

I dont usually like to enter this early, but I really think this is an abstract/true representation of the topic. Plus, I don't think I'll have too much time for going out shooting later this month :(

I was very very pleased to hear that self portraiture was the theme this month! In school, we're doing a project (in photography AND in my drawing class) called 31 nights of self portraiture where we have a list of titles and we interpret them however we please but the catch is you have to take one photo everyday (it does get over whelming considering i have two of these projects). But i figure this is perfect to put my favorite photo I've taken so far because it embodies the painter and photographer in me

camera- canon digital rebel xti
lens and focal length- canon 28-135mm at 28mm
shutter speed- 1/60
sensitivity- 1600
post processing- crop, up the saturation and contrast

the title for this one was The Prismatic Experience

Fuji S8000fd - 1/3 - f/4 - ISO 64 - 85mm

Photographed off my monitor. The old technique of using ASCII-characters to make (printed) portraits. A form of 'ASCII-Art'. Very 'Lo-Res'. Only 50 characters wide and 38 lines high. But nevertheless still quite recognisable.

Minor geometric adjustments to correct distortions and half a degree rotation to get everything straight again. Adjusted brightness and contrast to get a good black and white again. Slightly cropped and resized.

When in doubt..... Press the shutter.

Some of you may already have seen this photo in the Off topic-section (Whos/Whose is better?), but there's no rule about entering photos already posted. Took it this afternoon and did quite some editing on contrast, saturation, light, etc.

Camera Model: Sony DSLR-A700
Lens / focal length: 70-200mm f/2.8 G SSM / 70mm
Aperture: f/2.8
Shutter Speed: 1/125 sec.
Sensitivity: ISO 100
Post processing: lots of it, mainly saturation, contrast, levels and cloning (shadow on the background). I removed some Melanocytic nevi, or moles, in English :) .

How this represents me? Not really actually. I'm not angry like this, my avatar is a better representation, but OK. Only read this assignment after I made the photo, so here's my explanation for looking so angry: I like mafia-movies and I kind of look like an actor straight out of the Godfather... :? no, probably not.

here we go.
here is an extreme close up of my eye. this is how i perceive the world around me and what allows people to see who i am. we often take for granted sight, and overlook the intricate details that make up our vision!

Camera Model: nikon d80
Lens and focal length: 18-55VR, @55mm
Aperture: f/5.6
Shutter Speed: 1/60th
Sensitivity: ISO 100
Post processing: single exposure converted to HDR then to black and white, tweaked contrast and clarity

I was playing with some controlled lighting by snooting my flash and at the same time working on rim lighting techniques, this was the result.

The idea behind the shot was for a moody feel, almost isolated and yet intimidating - It came out pretty close to how I pictured it in my mind really.
