Hello everyone, welcome to August’s Assignment!

The theme for this month is suggested by richcaw who won the June 2008 competition. In richcaw’s own words:

"I have decided to go for Trees. For me one of the fun parts of these assignments is discovering new techniques both in terms of original capture and then processing to create the final image. Therefore there are no limits on post-processing this month aside from not adding material that wasn’t in the original image.”

So there you have it, the theme for August is Trees, and as always the image you submit has to be taken during the month of entry – that is, taken during August 2008. Photos taken on an earlier date do not qualify!

RULES!

1: The photo you submit should be taken during the month of the actual assignment - so for this month's contest, it must be taken during August 2008.

2: You're only allowed to submit one image, and you can't change your mind once it's posted!

3: Images should be no larger than 500 pixels on their longest side.

As always, please exercise good judgement on what is suitable for the forum.

Please include a sentence or two with your photo describing what you were trying to achieve and if there were any particular challenges in doing so.

The Lady of Limekilns (Death in Repose)
OK, sorry about the macabre title and subject. This is a tree, honest! I came across this huge piece of driftwood - pretty much an entire tree at Limekilns beach in Fife (Scotland) today. After getting the shots home I realised this looked disturbingly like a decomposing head and shoulders

Actually there were several shots of the same piece of wood that seemed to have human or animal qualities (...perhaps a theme for a future assignment?).

I processed this some in Picasa and Photoshop to crop, desaturate, blow out the hilights to add focus to the subject, add film grain and then add a mild blue tone to cool it down for effect.

I hope you all think it's tree-mendous

p.s. if you click the pic it will take you to the Picasa site with the original unprocessed pic ( just to prove I'm not an axe murderer with a bad line in tree jokes ) it looks much better against the black background in slideshow mode.

Black and white conversion in Photoshop with tweaking of each colour. Highlight recovery and contrast boost. A slight crop and some other stuff I can't quite remember.

Typical problem with getting correct exposure in the woods with the bright sky and dark foreground was the main challenge.
