Apparently Canon is to build a new factory, coming online in July 2008, which will allow it to manufacture an extra 3 million CMOS sensors each year and so double its current DSLR sensor production.

Wouldn't it be nice to think that they would all be 16.7 MP full frame CMOS sensors such as are fitted to the EOS-1Ds Mark II, that volume production would make them incredibly cheap and that they would find their way into the EOS 5D successor? Well, one can dream...

Was it for extra DSLR sensors or for CMOS P&S sensors?

I confess I took the reports I read at face value when they said, to paraphrase, the new plant was for "CMOS sensors as used in DSLRs". The implication was that P&S cameras used CCDs but I haven't checked how true that is. That said, those same reports suggested that Canon currently produce around 3 million DSLRs and 24 million other digital cameras each year.

Well Canon is very proud of the fact it produces all the components in its DSLRs from the sensor to the processor and the body to the optics. As you know it uses CMOS sensors in its DSLRs, but buys in Sony CCDs (like almost everyone else) for its compacts. So I'd be guessing much of this plant's capacity would be to produce its own sensors for its compacts. If so it'd be interesting to see how they compare to the traditional CCDs...

But we can also hope it means bigger volumes on DSLR sensors and hopefully more affordable full-frame models (hopefully with some better means to countercat light fall-off in the corners).
