Congratulations to everyone who entered, especially all the first-timers in this section - it's great to have you on-board. So the huge poll above contains no fewer than 68 entries to choose from, and as always it's tough with only one vote each - so make yours count!

As always, the poll closes in three weeks at midnight GMT 21st July 2008. The winner will then have one week to set the theme for the following month, August’s Assignment.

Hello everyone, welcome to June's Assignment!

The theme for this month is suggested by JC who won the April 2008 competition. In JC's own words:

"For the June assignment I will go with one of the great ideas from the 'Suggestions for themes' thread. Although there a many good suggestions JakeOConnell's "Power of Light" stands out. Since photography is the art of drawing with light, this suggestion is more than brilliant and therefore I will appoint it for the June assignment.

So the contesters are to illustrate the power of light in their capture. I will also go with a rule, which makes it a bit more challenging. For the June assignment post processing is not allowed.

The intent with the no-post-processing-rule is to challenge the photographer to get the capture right on site - not by making it perfect through "magic" software. No post processing of any kind is allowed - including cropping."

So that's the challenge for June, and in answer to those who asked about RAW files, I would say it is ok to shoot in RAW, but please do not make any adjustments to the colour, brightness, contrast, crop etc. Stick with the default 'as camera' settings for all parameters. To comply with JC's theme, this assignment is all about staying pure and attempting to capture the complete final image at the time you press the button.

RULES!

1: The photo you submit should be taken during the month of the actual assignment - so for this month's contest, it must be taken during June 2008.

2: You're only allowed to submit one image, and you can't change you mind once it's posted!

3: Images should be no larger than 500 pixels on their longest side.

As always, please exercise good judgement on what is suitable for the forum.

Please include a sentence or two with your photo describing what you were trying to achieve and if there were any particular challenges in doing so.

We're all enthusiasts here, so it's also great to see what equipment you used and the settings too. So please also include the following:

Because I didn't want to repeat my strategy from last month (wait very long to think of an entry which was too complicated to make), I will post a picture I took this morning. In a park very close to my house there are many groups of little flies flying around, and even though these are terribly annoying, the can be beautiful too!

My initial goal was to capture the just the sun and try to get some detail in the clouds. When I saw these flies though, this quickly became the image I wanted to enter for this month's theme.

I'm curious to see what other's will think of for this month's theme.

i captured this while driving to work, i would not suggest operating a camera while driving by the way. It took me just holding the shutter at the sky for about 50 shots and this was the only one without a tree/street light/building in the way.

I thought it depicted my love for natural light marvelously.

A shaft of sunlight strikes a garden water feature and brings it alive.

A 50 Watt halogen mini spotlight turned up just enough to provide power to this li'l old calculator.
Sort of a fusion between last month's assignment and this month's.


Fuji S8000fd - 1/7 seconds - F8 (AP) - ISO64 - WB Incandenscent - AF

Shot handheld with IS on. First focused on the lamp's reflection in the solar cell, which is optically farther away than the calculator, and then with AF/AE lock framed the shot.

And that number? You'll find that everywhere.

Hello Everyone! I recently got a new DSLR and this was the first site I came across to teach me how to use it. I thought that my first post should show what you guys have taught me.

Candle Bulb:

I was trying to make the shot look like there was a flame in the light bulb - A fusion between historical and modern light. The flame is a little out of focus to hide the candle a touch.

Ok people,

I have to say I really enjoyed this assignment. The "no post processing rule really forced me to think about how to get the exposure and composition right first time. This photo is one from a series I took messing about with candles, flashguns, sparklers and a very dark room.

I was very pleased with the way this picture came out "The Power Of Light" being the explosion of the sparkler providing the look of power and the illumination for the picture. Hope you all like it

The picture came out exactly how I wanted to, the flame lightens the face and the hand, only! The exposure whas metered in Spot Metering Mode on the flame in manual mode, and then shot again with the subject!
