Hello everyone!

I'm asking whether to buy the 350D or the 400D.

350D pros:
- more sensitive than stated (ISO 1600 is actually ISO 2000)
- $200 cheaper in my country (I could use the money for another lens)
- 8MP photos are smaller in filesize than 10MP ones, and I don't need the extra 2MP (won't be printing larger than A4)
- status LCD doesn't drain battery life

400D pros:
- dust-cleaning system (although not so effective as the Olympus)
- faster focus in low light
- better use with lenses f/2.8 or faster
- big 2.5" LCD

I'm planning to use the body with more or less of the following lenses:
- EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM
- EF 85mm f/1.8 USM
- EF 28mm f/1.8 USM
- EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM
- EF 15mm Fisheye f/2.8
- EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro
and the 430ex flashlight.

Which one would you choose?

Thanks in advance,

Rares

Hi Rares,

I won't be so bold as to advise between the 350D and the 400D but I note that you are considering the EF 15mm Fisheye f/2.8. Be aware that this lens won't give the full 180° diagonal coverage on either the 350D or 400D as it is designed to do so on Canon's full-frame bodies such as the 5D. :(

Bob.

Hi Bob,

I intend to use the 15mm Fisheye as an ultra-wide-angle (since I've read that because of the 1.6 crop, the fish-eye effect gets diminished, and can be fully eliminated in post-processing).
BTW, it's far more affordable than the 10-22mm Canon, and I read that it's really sharp, with reduced CA and distorsions.

Again, about the 350D vs 400D:
People seem to really praise the 400D's 2.5" LCD. That, together with the better AF system (I read that the 400D has a second AF sensor, designed for lenses f/2.8 and faster, is that correct?) would make the 400D the right choice for the extra $200. What I'm concerned about is the under-exposure people are talking about (-1/3 EV constantly), and the fact that I lose the over-sensitivity of the 350D at the same noise level ...

What should I do?

PS. I apologize for my bad English.

Thanks,

Rares

Hi Rares,

There is another thread at http://www.cameralabs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=728&highlight= in this forum where the choice turned out to be 350D. Maybe that will help inform your choice.

One point that didn't come out in that discussion is how long you intend to keep your new camera body before upgrading. It may be that the difference in the price you get back for the 350D and the 400D could be a factor.

Bob.

If it is correct that Canon is going to be bringing out a new model (40D) in October to replace the somewhat outdated, but still great 30D, I was wondering if they may be thinking of bringing out a newer version of the 400D. Does anyone know?

Hello,

There are approx. 18 months between the Digital Rebel series models.

* 20/08/03: Canon EOS 300D / Digital Rebel (6 mp)
* 17/02/05: Canon EOS 350D / Digital Rebel XT (8 mp)
* 24/08/06: Canon EOS 400D / Digital Rebel XTi (10 mp)

So I would expect the 400D's succesor in february 2008.

Rares

PS. I'm still undecided between the 350D and the 400D ... I would appreciate some more opinions.

Thanks
