I think that is all most instructive, good work!

As this has been easily the most popular User Review here at the CL forum, perhaps the good folk will "see the light" about both this wonderful camera and the Pentax system :)

(I say as a long-time Pentax user coming "back" to Pentax in the digital age......)
And people think of themselves as (say) Nikon "fan-boys" LOL......

Ah, a few more pennies.....

Bonjour,

I had once the opportunity to talk about the bundled software Pentax Photo Browser, Pentax Photo Laboratory and Pentax Remote Assistant, which are great and deliver what they promise.

The first two are now on release 3.5 and found here. I only tested the Mac version.

I focus on Pentax Photo Laboratory, which turns a RAW picture (either PEF or PNG) into a JPEG file, with all the parameters available in the camera.

A Pentax Photo Laboratory help page provides a summary of what's new from the previous release:

Quote:
Enhanced image tone options

When processing RAW files, you can select from six arrangement options*1 (image tone options available with Custom Image, a new feature on the K20D) in addition to five Picture modes*2 and nine Scene modes*3. (Version 3.5 and later)

*1 Bright, Natural, Portrait, Landscape, Vibrant, and Monochrome
*2 Picture (Portrait), Picture (Landscape), Picture (Macro), Picture (Moving Object) and Picture (Night Scene Portrait)
*3 Scene: Night Scene, Scene: Surf & Snow, Scene: Text, Scene: Sunset, Scene: Kids, Scene: Pet, Scene: Candlelight, Scene: Museum, and Scene: Food

Hue, Filter Effect, and Toning added to the Other settings panel

The following three options have been added to the Other settings panel (in version 3.5 and later): Hue (for changing the image color), Filter Effect (for tuning the shading resulting from the color differences in images processed in monochrome), and Toning (for fine-tuning the color in monochrome images).

Basically, if you shoot in RAW with a K10D, with this new release of Pentax Photo Laboratory, you get the K20D main options through this two new functions. Here's the menu (sorry, in French :) )

Image

Now, I just wonder, with so many parameters and options to deal with on the K20D before shooting, could ever a photographer release the shutter button and take a picture :?: So RAW mode seems to provide a great solution, both to avoid missing the magic moment and then to fine-tune the picture with post-processing after :)

Best regards,

rei_vilo: Congrats on 20,000 views for this thread
((highest ranking thread ever on Camera Labs!))
You have obviously created and maintained a highly interesting thread for this camera together with all the other contributors.
Keep up the good work :!:

Bonjour Thomas,

Thanks for your message :) I can't believe such high a number, and counting :!:

I'm very happy with the K10D, so I don't plan to change for a K20D. So don't expect a Pentax K20D User Review, unless ;) (see next post)

Best regards from France

Bonjour,

Here's an open letter to Pentax so Camera Labs and I could deliver reviews on the new K20D :!:

Quote:
Bonjour Pentax,

The Pentax K10D User Review I started in June 2007 has just reached today 20,000 views :) It provides the average user point of view in complement to the more technical analysis provided by Gordon Laing, whose video-tour was instrumental in my choice.

The K20D has been launched and is available now. Don’t miss the opportunity of the coverage provided by both the Camera Labs review and forum. Just lend one camera to Gordon Laing and one to me for a couple of weeks, so each of us, the former in Australia, the later in France, could deliver and share the same highly watched technical and user reviews :!:

Best regards from France,

Bonjour, rei_vilo, et félicitations 8)

Reverting rapidly back to my native tongue (musn't tax Google's language tools too heavily) that's some achievement. If only you had even €0.10 for each viewing you'd be upgrading to a K20D and still have some cash left over. :)

Bob.

Bonjour Bob,

Thanks for your message and congratulations for your French :)

Yes, indeed... Exact figure is 0,06 € (= 1,200 € / 20,000), a 40% discount :!:

But the review of the K10D by Camera Labs and the video-tour featuring Gordon were free also... so I gave the service back with my free reviews...

Only Pentax could help all of us, so we could continue providing free help and recommendations through the Camera Labs site and forum :)

If you know people from Pentax, thank you for your help :!:

Best regards,

Hi Rei, allow me to add to what Thomas and Bob have said by congratulating you on this deservedly popular thread!

As for the K20D, I'd hope to test it later this month...

Bonjour Gordon,

Thank you for your message :)

I'm waiting for your test of the K20D with great interest. Unfortunately, since I don't plan to change, I wouldn't test it by myself and so I wouldn't publish a Pentax K20D User Review :( unless Pentax let me one for a couple of weeks, as I wrote in my Open Letter to Pentax.

If you know people from Pentax, thank you for your help :!:

Best regards,

Pentax would send you a copy immediately if they had any sense. :)

I picked the D80 in the end but gave the K10d serious consideration because of your review Rei_vilo.

Bonjour Graham,

Thanks for your message. I'm really surprised by the number of views on my K10D user review. I hope Pentax is listening to you :!:

The point is, there are plenty of excellent cameras today, and the choice is really difficult. Hence my 3 steps approach:
  • Step 1, technical reviews provide first class information on quality (like those provided in Camera Labs) and discard bad cameras.
  • Step 2, the not-so-scientific point of view of an average user gives an idea on how this camera could be used.
  • Step 3, on the shop, the on-hands test checks how the camera fits on your hands, how clear is the view finder, ...

For step 2, the forum is the right place: some readers asked me how to handle a specific situation and if I coudl try... I discovered that way new features on my K10D :)

Enjoy your D80 :!:

Bonjour,

After my first test of the K10D burst mode, I tried again this summer with a new SDHC-card SanDisk Ultra II.

Image

Here are two picture of  The Wave Sequence, shot this summer on burst mode at high speed 1/3000. Speed averages 3.5 fps.

Bonjour,

The count-down for the 30,000 views has started :!:

When are we going to reach that level :?: Up to new readers
