Camera Labs

Being occasionally a little slow on the uptake I have only just realised that neither Canon nor Nikon make a fisheye lens for their cropped sensor models. OK, their fisheye lenses will work on the 400D/D80 etc. but they won't give the 180° diagonal view which rather defeats the objective (sic).

Don't such cameras deserve proper fisheye lenses?

Hmmm - the 10.5mm f/2.8G ED AF DX Fisheye-Nikkor claims 180 degrees...

I confess I am not terribly clued up about Nikon name conventions but are you saying that this lens can only be used with Nikon's cropped sensor models? If it is designed to work with their full frame camera bodies then as it gives a 180° diagonal view with them it can't give the same coverage with a D80. In my book that disqualifies it from full fisheye status with such cameras even though it does provide some barrel distortion.

Hi Bob, DX in Nikon's naming convention means it ONLY works on cropped bodies. But as you know, Thomas is the expert on this lens, so over to his review!

Yep, Gordon is rrrrright!
DX means it's 180° on cropped sensors. On a FF-body the 10.5 produces a circular picture.

Nikon definitely wins this round as the Canon EF 15mm f2.8 Fisheye is designed for full frame sensors and so may not provide the expected effect on cropped sensor bodies.
