Post subject: lumix tz3 vs lumix tz5

I think the panasonic tz3 is a great camera with one possible exception : it is very difficult to see through the lcd screen in very bright conditions. The tz5 has a higher resolution screen, does this alleviate this problem?

Hi Michael, welcome to the Cameralabs forums!

I didn't have the TZ3 next to the TZ5 so couldn't say for sure, but I don't believe the TZ5's screen is any brighter or easier to view in direct light.

But it does now have the auto brightening feature, which worked quite well outdoors. This automatically activates the power LCD mode which brightens the screen,

Have you tried the manual PowerLCD option on your TZ3 in bright light?

The 5 is slightly better (I have both cameras), but in very bright light neither is good. If I were choosing, I'd get the 5 since the image quality is so much better.

Is the image quality really that much better? Would I notice less noise at 400 or 800 iso ?

If you want the really good news, check out the popphoto.com tests on ISO and noise for the TZ5. My own tests with the TZ3 and TZ5 confirm that.

I have a TZ3 I'm going to give away, since I don't think the picture quality is good. And the video quality is worse yet, never mind the motor noise. I think the TZ3 would be OK at $150 u.s., but any more than that would be wasted. You should see how much(!) better the old Casio EX-Z1000 pic quality is than the TZ3.
