This lens seem to produce very sharp pictures.
The test results seem to show that it's one of the sharpest lenses of it's type from any
manufacturer. It outperforms a number of primes.
Like Roy (aka Defiance) my example gets strapped in front of a 40D. Here are a couple of shots (clickable for the full-sized versions) that I took when the camera was very new:
200mm, f/5.6, 1/320 sec.
Developed: Auto contrast, Shadow/Highlight - Shadows + 25%
Not the finest landscape I've ever taken (honest
) but included to demonstrate how the longer focal lengths can compress distance. This shot was hand-held and while not pixel perfect I think without IS it would have been a lot worse.
192mm, f/7.1, 1/640 sec.
Cropped and Developed: Out of focus insect removed from the sky.
Wasn't even expecting this shot until the very last moment. Fortunately the lens was already fitted so I just swung the camera up and fired off a few shots. IS seemed to cope very well with the fairly rapid panning.
200mm, f/5.6, 1/400 sec.
Developed: Auto Levels
Hand-held again and like the last one taken from a boat so a tripod wasn't an option. Another tribute to IS perhaps, rather than my artistry! I think the sky would have benefited hugely if I had used a polariser.
